Fire In Ice Sculptures At Frederick Maryland's First Saturday

The town was hopping, people were shopping, and we enjoyed the excellent cold weather festivities! As we walked through huge crowds in the historic section of Frederick Maryland's downtown, we quickly noticed that the cars were filling up the roads. Yes sir, the amount of strolling people on the sidewalks was much larger than usual. That is due to the February 'Fire In Ice!' event presented by the Downtown Frederick Partnership. One of the biggest First Saturday events of the year and what great luck to find ourselves here tonight! Wow! We were off to enjoy the ice sculptures!

Thankfully the weather was mild compared to the freezing weather we have been enduring. We loved how the ice sculptures looked radiant with their icy sparkle and shine. When the sun sets, the skies darken, and the city lights come on. The ice begins to reflect surrounding colors, and the night's magic begins. The stunning ice swan below was one of my two very favorites of the night! Love love love it! So graceful and regal! This one got quite a bit of attention from the crowds with lots of phones snapping up a photo op. There is actually a little girl in a pink coat on the other side of the swan giving it that hot color pop.

When walking along Carroll Creek by the frozen water we came upon a series of ice signs... ice advertisements? Uh where were the sculptures? Seemed like this would have been the ideal spot to showcase some great ice art. Hmmmm... we are moving on. Hoping to find some real ice sculptures along the streets of town, we then found this sledding penguin hanging out on a street corner.

Then we spied a happy waving lobster! Alright! Nice! We got some real ice sculptures!

There was a swimming fish that looked similar to a past year's fish sculpture we have seen.

Check out the sculpture below! I absolutely loved this fantastic lonely goat ice sculpture! This is my other most favorite ice sculpture of the evening! Look at the handsome details! The pointy long horns were exquisite. Plus being a Capricorn I thought it was a sensational idea for a gorgeous ice sculpture!

Sitting quietly on the Market and Church Street's corner we found this sweet little snowflake.

At the Market and Patrick Street corner was a chilly pineapple ice sculpture.

As the afternoon light became the evening glow the ice began to reflect its surrounding colors and lights. Notice how you can see right through this ice cameo to the people chatting on the other side.

The nationally known restaurant 'Volt' was hosting a lively family friendly fire pit roasted marshmallow party in their courtyard for kids and adults. Since I was really interested in viewing the spectacular old mansion from other angles we strolled right in. I am sure someday we will have a great meal in this famed foodie destination! For now let's enjoy the great outdoor space.

Adult peeps were lined up in the Volt courtyard to get drinks served from a whiskey bar ice sculpture.

The front entrance to 'Volt'... I could stare at those luscious architectural details all day!

Close to those grand front entrance steps  'Volt' had a colorful Maryland flag ice sculpture on display.

Next up we passed an ice fairy chillin' in front of a warm shop window.

Speaking of shops we did go inside and enjoy a few that night. We went into one of my all-time fav stores for kitchen decor "Relish" and chatted with the owner Hallie. I have a number of her cool vintage retro pieces at home. Then hubby and I crossed the street and bought some non-toxic deodorants in 'Terressentials.' Both shops are located on Patrick St.

We also checked out two new-to-us establishments downtown. The 'Treaty General Store' where we purchased a vintage style recycled piece of glassware. Then we wandered through an amazing vintage Industrial Home decor store where I took hubby's photo near a huge spotlight floor lamp. No surprise that when walking down Market St., I peered into the rock shop 'Earthly Elements' longing to own all of the huge amethysts and crystals in the window!

There was a shamrock in front of Bushwaller's Irish Pub of course.

Then we saw an ice sculpture on Market Street representing world peace that I actually wish was a permanent addition to the town... perhaps one made from glass!

In front of the jewelry store there was a great big shiny diamond.

We also saw this big black Cadillac hearse parked in front of a cake shop called Cakes To Die For. Peering into their shop window there was many a goth looking cake on their shelves.

On the walk to our non-funeral style car we passed this familiar floating head below...

and then this trippy head in front of Zebop's groovy shop... and so we kept truckin'.

Back at Carroll Creek there was a line of folks waiting to get their photo taken sitting on this 'Ice Throne' which I thought was a great idea. The Queen would have loved for her photo to be taken on this cold hard love seat since it was near to Valentines Day... Alas being that we were really hungry we did not want to wait in line and fight the photo op crowd at that moment. Maybe next year I will sit upon thine icy throne!

We began to discuss that during the evening we noticed there were more 'typographic ice sign ads' for businesses than artistic 3D objects d'art sculpturesThat is disappointing and sad as each sign is one less opportunity for a creative ice sculpture in my mind. To be honest we were we not the only ones who observed the blatant advertising signage pretending to be sculpture. We heard others sarcastically faking their "Oh's and Ahh's" as they passed these ice signs and then adding a few unsavory comments to boot. The people's opinion was that the ads were a lame excuse for sculpture. Kind of a fake out.

I do understand that this special evening is to bring shoppers into downtown during the slow winter months so I hope everyone did a brisk business. I just don't want the organizers to lose sight of what brings all the folks like us out on cold winter's nights en mass... actually getting to view real three dimensional ice sculpture. Let's support more inventive ice creations by ice sculpture artists for everyone to enjoy while they shop and dine. Moving forward into the future of 'Fire In Ice' night hopefully there are less of these ad signs. It can only give the event a bad name to just have ice advertising. Stores may lose those crowds since there will be nothing left to see and that would be a real meltdown of a good thing.  "Art not ads"...

I feel at this point if I posted photos of those 'store name ice signs' it would actually be bad publicity for them. So I will finish with only one photo of a ice sign because it is a worthy group which supports the arts in Frederick. I previously shared this same event in 2013 here on the blog when we came across the ice sculptures on a Sunday. Even as they began to slightly melt, you can see the shape of the ice sculpture art reflected the shop's main business activity, and they were not a lettered sign molded from ice.

Overall we had a wonderful evening strolling through the historic downtown area that we love so much, and we were very grateful that we stumbled upon such a cool event once again. We had tried to dine at some of the downtown restaurants that evening as well. Woefully we found out it would be a two hour wait without having previously made reservations for 'Fire In Ice' night. Lesson... next year make reservations ahead of time! Since with all that walking we really had worked up an appetite we headed to our car to purchase food at Wegman's Food Store and bring it home to eat. Through the car window we passed two wonderfully executed ice sculptures on East St. of a bird, and a butterfly. Wish we had gotten photos of those two lovely piece of art for you! Once again the serendipity of being there during this 'First Saturday' in February for 'Fire In Ice' was perfect. Thank you Frederick for all that you do to make life fun!

Tedeschi Trucks At Hot August Blues

One August day we headed out with the family to "Hot August Blues" in Hunt Valley Maryland to see one of our favorite bands, the "Tedeschi-Trucks Band," featuring the fantabulos Susan Tedeschi and her husband Derek Trucks. Finally they have come together and formed a band with like minded souls! We wanted to take advantage of this opportunity to see them play together while they are out touring and promoting their new album 'Revelator.' Gone are the days when my daughter and I would be pressed against the stage in front of Susan when she came to Baltimore. Word has gotten out! Darn.

We were in the back of the crowd under a white tent on this Hot August Blues day. That is quite okay, because when you have a two year old with you, there has got to be room to move. Actually Aowyn would like to be on the move more than anyone would like! Grandpa got a workout. Sometimes it was just round and round the long blue row of port-o-pots! Then there was when she ran from my pregnant daughter into the crowd. Just like Forest Gump she is..."runnnang!"

I remember one of the first concerts that I attended with my hubby. It was after I told Ben that my daughter and myself had tickets to go see Susan and Derek, and I asked if would he like to go to the show as well. I was happy that Ben was enthusiastic about the show, as I was excited that Derek would also be sitting in with Susan on that evening. I love me some slide guitar! And since I had seen Derek play with the Allman Brothers band in Virginia, I can assure you, as a world class guitar player, Derek Trucks slide work is wicked good! Plus for the Rams Head concert we were right against the stage! Yeah baby.

I think watching and listening to Derek up close that night had an influence on Ben's own slide work. Oh Yes! I so love when Ben uses the slide on acoustic and especially electric guitar. It sings! Bands played the festival all day on two stages pumping out the jams. The crowd enjoyed the music, crafts and food vendors.

Band just before "Tedeschi Trucks Band" was "Robert Randolph and The Family Band."

A really enjoyable group with soulful sounding rock and great musicianship. Are they happy or what? I love that joyful expression!

Roberts pedal steel slide work was really exciting, and seemed effortless.

It was Sunday and the band invited people up on the stage for some 'go to meetin' dancing. People took them up on their offer!

Nightfall at Oregon Ridge and the "Tedeschi Trucks Band" begins to rock with soulful abandon. We are feeling it! The glow fills the waiting crowd.

The main event filled the stage with talented powerful musicians! We got those vibes where you cannot help but move, and our little Aowyn does her two year old moves to the beat too!

Susan and Derek

The Dueling Drummers.

Susan can saaaaannnng! She speaks with a sweet delicate voice but when she sings a powerful force comes from her heart, filled with the truth of her soul. There are many great videos on this vevo site of the bands music. I could fill this page with them all! Instead here is a video of one of their songs they performed to give you an idea of what it sounded like to be in the presence of this awesome band!
You can also learn about all the other members of the band in their behind the scenes making of "Revelator" videos filmed at Susan and Dereks home studio. What a wonderful group of people. If you are a music lover you should also check out the Crossroads 2010 video for yourself! The band has some really great jams with Warren Haynes.

If you are not yet familiar with Derek Trucks...Dereks uncle was the drummer in the Allman Brothers Band, Butch Trucks. Derek grew up a part of the Allman Family of musicians and was influenced as a young child by the bands music. He was a prodigy at 9 and was opening for the Allman Brothers by 12 and of course playing with the best musicians in the world. You can read the Wikipedia about Derek here or just watch this video of Derek at age 12! This is the age when many young boys come to Ben to start guitar lessons. So I say,
"Hey young grasshopper.... here is some inspiration!"

This old 2007 video below of Susan Tedeschi reminds me of the times my daughter and I would go out to see Susan when she came to town. She could belt out one song, and be crying during the next ballad. Touching your emotions is what music is all about and Susan has the voice and heart that communicates easily. We just love her!

Combine that with the talent of her husband Derek and the members of the 'Tedeschi Trucks Band' band and you have the recipe for a perfect evening under the stars! Great weather and great music filled the air that night. Our family and the crowd went home very happy. Especially my daughter, as this day was our birthday present to her!

The Famous Spoutwood May Day Fairie Festival

This weekend is the 20th Anniversary of The Annual Spoutwood May Day Fairie Festival. Held in Glen Rock Pennsylvania, always on the first weekend of May, rain or shine, this is the longest running fairy festival in the country. What makes this festival the best, is the beautiful outdoor setting filled with magical places that wee sprite love.  Fae folk are nature spirits, and the obvious place to emulate that love for nature, is with a fairy festival in the country.

Spoutwood Farm is an enchanted friendly place to relax, a wonderful place to enjoy people, the perfect place to feel the music, and most of all... a fun place to play!!! No matter what your age, come be a part of the of the annual celebration of the return of Spring! Enjoy the happy parade of colorful fairies, and creative people that fill the fields and walkways on Spoutwood Farm.

There are 70 arts and crafts vendors throughout the festival grounds, along with two areas for food and drink. Music fills the air on a variety of stage locations throughout the weekend. Who will you see? What will you see? Who will you be?

For children, the Spoutwood Fairie Festival is a wonderland at every turn as there is so much to see and do!

Waves of floating bubbles to run through! Run! Fly! Jump! Try to capture one for a fleeting sparkling moment!  This area is always shining with delighted little fairy faces!

A beautiful faerie along the woods creates some magic...

Stroll past a mystical Master Wizard...

Keep your eyes open for the Fairie King and Queen...

A pony ride would be nice...

or even tickling your toes in a cool running stream!

Playing dress up and using your creative imagination is the best reason to enjoy your day at the fairie festival!

Posie Fairy...perhaps we should join her for afternoon tea.

Time for some awesome music and tribal beats! There is Albannach performing last year, and wowing the large crowd that always gathers to feel their infectious rhythms! Spoutwood May Day Faire Festival attracts some of the best musical acts! This year the amazing 'Telesma' will be performing on Saturday and Sunday! You can check the Spoutwood website for this years full musical line-up.

The 'Gypsy Nomads' now known as 'Frenchy and The Punk' were up on the hill inspiring some free form faerie dancing in 2010.

Children's music is in a hidden realm made for exploring. A few years ago Ben and I ran into Ellis Woodward performing for the little people! Of course Ben joined Ellis for a few spontaneous tunes!

Lets go get our face painted!

We could get a beautiful hair braid by our friend Ellen. This is the kind lady who created the hairstyle for Painting Queen's wedding day.

Oh now its time for the drum circle! You can freely join in, or just watch what is a favorite activity at Spoutwood!

After all that movement, now it's time to take a moment to relax.

I think we are hungry for some of Jeff's delicious quesadillas and sweet potato fries!

Say hello to the Mossmen!

Let's go for a walk around the grounds! Wow! Something magical is happening!

Enchantment at every turn!

That is one beautiful lizard!

The Greenman of Spoutwood is always ready to give the call of "Kubiando!"

In 'Nature Place' a group shares their knowledge of reptiles.

Beautiful llamas rest in the mid day sun.

Let's keep trekking up the hill towards Frodo's house.
Ahh there it is with a glittering fairy at the entrance!

Faerie Magazine always brings in the best fantasy artists to their tent. As you can see, the renown artist Charles Vess enjoys a great fairy festival. He will be there again this year giving a talk, along with the fantastic Gary Lippincott.

Candice Night Of 'Blackmore's Night' attended Spoutwood and shared her light with fans.

The 'Tribes of Spoutwood' exist for those who would like to express themselves within a like-minded group and enjoy the celebration of light that Spring and Summer bring to the world.

After indulging in some tasty treats up on Frodo's Hill and wandering through all the craft tents it's time to wind down the hill.

A creator of gorgeous Fairy Wings passes by in the crowd!

Can't resist another trip through the bubble field!

There goes another wizard!

I didn't know this guy smiled.

The weather is beautiful, and the air smells so sweet. After a long winters nap, it is good to be in the warm light of Spring with so many friends, loved one's and fae!

We have seen and experienced much today! We will return again to enjoy the sights and sounds of the 'Spoutwood May Day Fairie Festival.'

Everyone is welcomed in this colorful glen filled with magic. You can play and express your creative self, while enjoying the beauty of other peoples expressions of light, and artful costume.

The glow of the sun tells us this day is ending.

Let's catch the last sweet rays.

Even the animals try to squeeze in one more moment of fun!

Heading back to the parking field. We are grateful for this day to celebrate life. Thank you Rob and Lucy Wood for sharing your land and your light with the world. Spoutwood May Day Fairie Festival is one of the highlights of the year for many of our friends and family!
